The article discusses the transformation from "market capitalism" to the new ("pro-business") capitalism. Market capitalism is the organization of economic activities through private entrepreneurship in free competitive markets. The "new capitalism" is characterized by re-regulation to the benefit of the "probusiness" sector. This article largely utilizes Robert Reich's criteria and analysis of the new capitalism to characterize market capitalism in order to provide a comparison between these two types of capitalism. In addition to Robert Reich's analysis, the paper also uses the work of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes and Thomas Piketty. (original abstract)
